Moses part 6

Picture of a piece of wood in the water

Moses led the Israelites through the desert for three days but they found no water.

Then they did find water at a place called Marah but it tasted so bitter that they could not drink it.

The people grumbled and asked what they were going to drink.

Moses prayed to God who showed him a piece of wood. Moses threw it into the water and it became fit to drink.

Then they came to an oasis at  a place called "Elim" where there were twelve springs and 70 palm trees. The Israelites camped there for a time.

Then they travelled on and  for many days they found no food. They started grumbling again and said, "We wish we had never left Egypt. When we were there we had meat to eat and as much food as we wanted. Now you have led us into the desert and we will all starve to death."

The Lord said to Moses," Now I am going to make food rain down from the sky," so Moses said to the people,"The Lord will give you meat to eat in the evening and as much bread as you want in the morning."

In the evening a large flock of quails flew in  so the Israelites were able to kill some of them and use them for food.

Picture of Israelites gathering manna  *

In the morning there was dew all around the camp. When the dew evaporated some food called manna was left. It was like a small white seed and tasted like biscuits made with honey.

God told Moses to tell the people to gather the manna each morning. They should gather what they wanted for the day and then eat it. They should not save any of it for the next day.

Some people did what Moses told them but some tried to keep some of the manna but the next day it was full of worms and smelt rotten and Moses was very angry with them.

.
On the sixth day they gathered twice as much food as on the other days because Moses told them that the seventh day was a day of rest dedicated to the Lord.  Everyone saved a portion of manna for the seventh day and the manna did not spoil or get worms in it.

Picture of Moses striking the rock *

The Lord commanded the Israelites to move on and ond day they made camp at Rephidim but they could find no water. They complained to Moses and said,"Give us water to drink.

Moses prayed to the Lord who told him to strike the rock with his stick. When he did this, a stream of water poured from the rock.

The Bible tells us that the Israelites spent 40  years in the desert and in that time they learned that God would always provide them with what they needed.  Later they came to live in the land of Canaan, the land that God had promised to them.

Before this happened they had many adventures and we may look at these later.
