Paul shakes off a snake.

The people of Malta did their best to look after Paul and all of those who had come ashore from the ship. It was cold and it started to rain so they lit a bonfire. Paul got together an armful of sticks to put on the fire.  A poisonous snake was hidden among the sticks and when it felt the heat of the fire it came out, bit his hand and hung on.  When the people of Malta saw this they said to one another, "This man must be a murderer. He has not been drowned but God will not not let him live."

Paul shook off the snake and he was perfectly all right. The people thought that Paul's arm would swell up or that he would drop down dead.

They watched for a long time but nothing awful happened to Paul.  They thought no ordinary person could be alive and well after being bitten by such a poisonous snake and that Paul must be a god.

The chief magistrate of the Island was a man called Publius. He asked Paul and his friends to stay with him. They stayed for three days.

Publius's father was ill in bed. He was shivery and had a fever.  He had been ill for quite a while.  Sometimes he would start getting better and then the fever would come back and he would be sick and shivery once more. Paul went to see him.  He prayed and laid his hands on him and the man got better.

Other sick people heard about this and came to Paul who made them well too. When the winter was over the Centurion and his soldiers took Paul on to another ship called the Castor and Pollux.  The people of Malta brought them food and other things that they would need on the voyage.
