After this Paul made long Missionary journeys, sometimes travelling by road and sometimes going on sailing ships. This is a very long story so I cannot tell you everything that happened but i will tell you some of the more exciting things. At first Paul travelled with Barnabas but later Barnabas left and Paul chose a man called Silas to travel with him.

When Paul and Silas went to the city of Philippi they were both put in prison.

It happened like this. There was a girl who was not very well and she went around shouting at people. Many people thought that a strange spirit lived in the girl and that she could tell fortunes. The girl was a slave and people paid money to her owners to have their fortunes told.

The girl started shouting at Paul but he saw that there was something wrong and he spoke to her and made her well. People thought she could not tell fortunes any more so her owners did not get any more money.

They were so angry that they went and told lies to the magistrates who had Paul and Silas put in prison. They told the jailer to guard them very carefully and make sure that they did not escape. When the jailer heard this he put them in the inner prison and put their feet in the stocks. Even although these horrible things had happened Paul and Silas still trusted God.

Through the night Paul and Silas prayed and sang praises. In the middle of the night there was an earthquake, the prison doors opened and the prisoners were freed from the stocks.

When the jailer woke up and found the doors open he thought the prisoners had escaped and he was so frightened about what would happen to him that he took out his sword to kill himself but Paul said "Do yourself no harm. We are all here."

The jailer understood that Paul was a man of God.

"What must I do to be saved" he asked?"  Put your trust in the Lord Jesus," said Paul.  Paul told the story of Jesus to the jailer and to everyone in his house. They were all baptised and became followers of Jesus.

In the morning the magistrates learned that they had made a mistake.  They told Paul and Silas that they were very sorry and let them go.
