The Roman soldiers were going to take Paul to Rome. They took him to a port in Palestine and they got on a boat. They first sailed near to Cyprus and then transferred to another ship at Myra which is in Asia Minor. Next they sailed near to the island of Crete. The winds were against them and Paul said that they must land at a port in Crete. If they did not do this the ship and its cargo would be lost and some people might lose their lives. The Centurion talked to the Captain of the ship and the Captain wanted to go on. There was a harbour nearby but it would not keep the ship safe from storms during the winter. They decided to sail further along the coast of Crete and find a better harbour.

The wind began blowing from the South and they thought they could get to the harbour but then it changed direction and began to blow from the North East.  It was very stormy and they could not see the sun during the day or the stars  at night. They began to throw the cargo overboard to make the ship lighter.

Paul said," God has told me that all of our lives will be saved but the ship will be lost."

When the sailors thought that they were near land they started to lower the ship's boat but Paul said to the Centurion, "These man must stay on board or we cannot get to safety." They then cut the ropes and let the boat drop into the sea. Then Paul said to the others,"You have not eaten anything for many days. Have something to eat now. Your lives depend upon it."

Then they saw some land with a sandy beach. They tried to steer the ship on to the beach but it hit the sea bottom and became stuck.

The soldiers thought that they had better kill the prisoners so that they did not swim away and escape but the Centurion stopped them from doing this. Instead they undid the ropes that were binding Paul.

The Centurion gave orders that all those who could swim should jump overboard and swim to shore. Those who could not swim came ashore on planks or broken parts of the ship. All of them came safely to land.

They found that they had landed on the island of Malta.
