The answer is 3 days.
During the first day the snail climbs 2 feet up the pole. During the first night it slides back to the 1 foot level.
During day 2 it climbs another 2 feet so it is now 3 feet up the pole.
During the second night it slides back to the 2 foot level.
During day 3 it climbs another 2 feet and it is now at the top of the pole.
People get this wrong because they reckon on the snail sliding back on day 3 but at the end of day 3 it has reached the top of the pole.
