In the east were wise men who spent a lot of time looking at the stars.  They believed that when the stars and planets were in a certain place this showed that some great and important thing was going to happen.

One day they saw a new star and they said that this meant that a great leader called the Messiah was going to be born.

They set out on a long journey. They went first to Jerusalem and began to ask, "Where is the child who is born to be King of the Jews? We have seen his star and we have come to pay him homage."

When king Herod heard this he was very worried. He was a very bad king.  "I am king of the Jews now," he thought, "but no one likes me and when this boy grows up, people will want him to be king.  That means that I will not be king any longer. I cannot have that. I know what I will do. I will find this baby boy and kill him."

He talked to the other leaders in Jerusalem and asked them where the child would be born. "The prophets have said that he will be born in Bethlehem", they told him.

Next Herod asked the wise men to come and see him.  He pretended to be friendly. "This is very important", he said, "The prophets say he will be born in Bethlehem but we do not know exactly where.  Now I would like you to go to Bethlehem and find him. When you have done that come back and see me on your way home and I will go and pay homage to him, myself."

The wise men followed the star to Bethlehem.

They went into the stable and saw the child with Mary, his mother. They bowed to the ground in homage. They gave him their gifts of gold frankinsense and myrrh.

When they lay down to sleep they had a dream. In it they learned that Herod was not really friendly at all, but wanted to kill Jesus.  They did not go back to see Herod but they went home another way.

After they had gone away, Joseph had a dream. In the dream an angel appeared. The angel told him that Herod was trying to find Jesus and kill him. Joseph did not wait for it to get light. He got up in the dark. He took Mary and Jesus and set out for Egypt. They got there safely. They stayed there until they heard that Herod had died.  Then they came back home to Nazareth.
