The Parable of the Good Samaritan

There was a man in Israel who was a teacher of the law. He did not like Jesus so he thought he would ask him a difficult question. He thought Jesus might give the wrong answer. The man asked him, "What must I do, so that God will give me eternal life and I will live for ever?"
Jesus said, "What do the Scriptures say and how do you interpret them?"

The man quoted two pieces of scripture: The first was,"Love the Lord your God with all your heart, with all your soul, with all your strength and with all your mind." and the second was "Love your neighbour as you love yourself."
Jesus said,"You are right. If you do this you will live for ever."

Now the man was a teacher of the law and he knew all this very well. He felt ashamed that he had asked Jesus this question when he knew the answer already so he asked Him to explain. "He said, "But who is my neighbour?"

Jesus used a parable to explain this.

He said, " A man was travelling on the road from Jerusalem to Jericho when he was attacked by robbers. They beat him up and stole his robes. They went away and left him. He was so badly hurt that he would have died if no one came to help."

Now a Priest came along and saw the man but he did nothing to help but he walked past on the other side of the road. Then a Levite (a teacher of the Law) came along. He went over and looked at the man but then he left him and walked on.

But a Samaritan who was travelling that way came along and saw the man and when he saw him his heart was filled with pity."

Now the Samaritans lived in a different area of the land to the Jews. Jews and Samaritans believed different things about God and Jews and Samaritans hated each other. Jesus did not say this in the Parable because everyone knew all about it already.

Jesus said, "The Samaritan went over to the man, poured oil and wine on his wounds and bandaged them. He put the man on his own animal and took him to an inn where he looked after him. In the morning he gave the innkeeper two silver coins and said, 'Take care of him. Whatever more you spend I will repay you when I come this way again.'"

"Now," Jesus asked, "Which one of these three, do you think, acted as a neighbour to the man who was attacked by the robbers.?"
The teacher of the Law answered,"The one who was kind to him."
Jesus said, "You go and do the same."
