Gladys could see that the little girl had not been having enough food to eat. She was about 5 years old but she was so starved that she could hardly stand. She had sores all over her. This sometimes happens when someone is not getting enough of the proper foods.
Gladys talked to the woman and found out that she was not the child's mother. The two of them had just been begging together. Gladys decided that she would look after the girl and make sure she had plenty to eat so she gave ninepence to the beggar woman.
She took the little girl away with her. She tried to think of a name for the little girl and decided to call her "Ninepence".

Gladys was still looking after the Inn and still working as the foot inspector. She found that she was very short of money and she could not spend very much on herself. She dressed like the Chinese people around her because those clothes were not very expensive.
